Hampstead is a hilltop village that happens to be in London, four miles from Charing Cross. Its streets are steep and narrow, its houses are old, and its Heath is the closest thing to countryside in the inner city. Minibus hire Hampstead families book is shaped by all of that. Weddings at the old parish church, school trips and sports fixtures, airport runs and days out, with every pickup planned around the hills.
From our base in SE1, Hampstead is about thirty to forty minutes outside the rush hour.
Weddings on the hill
St John-at-Hampstead, the parish church on Church Row, is one of the area's best-known wedding churches, and Hampstead has plenty more venues in its village halls, private houses and restaurants. Receptions often head out of the village to a hotel or a venue elsewhere in north London, or out to a country house over the Hertfordshire border.
Wedding photos on the Heath are a Hampstead tradition, and the driver can wait at the edge of the Heath while the couple and their party walk up for the pictures. Allow half an hour more than you think for that, especially on a sunny Saturday.
For weddings, a minibus loop between the ceremony and the reception keeps guests on schedule. Church Row is narrow, so the driver will stop at the nearest point that's safe for a larger vehicle and guests will walk the last part.
Minibus hire Hampstead for school groups
Hampstead has a lot of schools, including well-known independent schools such as University College School and South Hampstead High, and they book us for museum trips, sports fixtures and field trips. Hampstead Heath itself is used for outdoor learning and for school cross-country races, and its ponds, meadows and woods make it a popular field study site.
For regular runs, like weekly fixtures, we can book the dates for the term.
Keats House, near the bottom of the Heath, and Burgh House in the village are both small museums that draw school, poetry and local history groups.
Kenwood and the Heath
Kenwood House, at the top of the Heath, is an English Heritage house with free entry, a famous art collection and lawns that run down to the lake. In the summer, its grounds host events and picnics, and groups come from across London.
The Heath's swimming ponds and the lido at Parliament Hill draw groups in the summer. Fenton House, a National Trust property in the village, is another small museum worth a stop. Highgate Cemetery, on the far side of the Heath, runs guided tours that are often combined with a walk across from Hampstead. Parliament Hill, on the southern edge of the Heath, has one of the best views over London. It's a popular first stop on tours, and the driver can drop near the bottom and wait while the group walks up.
Luton, Heathrow and the Finchley Road
Luton is around forty-five minutes to an hour from Hampstead outside the rush hour, via the Finchley Road and the M1. Heathrow is about the same, via the North Circular and the A40. London City is around forty-five minutes across London, and Stansted about an hour and a quarter, via the North Circular and the M11.
The Finchley Road is the main route north and south, and it's slow at peak times, especially around Swiss Cottage. For early flights, the roads are clear, and a 4am pickup for a 6:30 flight from Luton is plenty. Golders Green and Swiss Cottage, on either side of the hill, are often part of the same pickup run.
The Royal Free and the south of Hampstead
The Royal Free Hospital, on Pond Street near the bottom of the hill, is one of London's major hospitals, and staff book us for team events and leaving dos. Belsize Park and South End Green, nearby, are quieter and easier for a minibus than the village streets. Hospital staff work round the clock, so their bookings are often late evenings or weekends, after a shift.
Steep streets in the village
Hampstead's village streets were laid out long before anyone thought of minibuses. Heath Street and the High Street are steep and busy, and the side streets are narrow, with parking on both sides and tight corners. Some are one-way. Hampstead station is the deepest on the Underground, reached by lifts, and the streets around it are among the busiest in the village.
The thing to know about minibus hire Hampstead families book for home pickups in the old village is that a 16-seater can't always reach the front door. We'll check the address and agree a pickup on the nearest road the vehicle can reach safely, and the driver will message when they arrive.
