London City Airport minibus transfers for teams and families

The short-hop airport in the Royal Docks. Group transfers from the City, Canary Wharf and further afield, with tunnel charges and ExCeL days in mind.

London City is the one airport inside the city itself. It sits in the Royal Docks, a short run east of Canary Wharf, and it's built for speed. A small terminal, short walks, and flights that mostly go to European business cities and a handful of holiday spots. It's the airport where a fifteen-minute drive replaces an hour on the motorway. A London City Airport minibus is usually booked by teams heading to a meeting in Edinburgh, Amsterdam or Zurich, or by families who live close enough to make it the easy choice.

London City Airport minibus runs from the City and Canary Wharf

From Canary Wharf, the airport is around ten to fifteen minutes. From Bank or Liverpool Street, it's usually twenty to thirty, along the Limehouse Link and the A13. From SE1, allow about twenty-five to thirty-five minutes outside the rush hour.

That short run is why businesses book it. A team of eight can leave the office at a sensible time, arrive together, and walk straight into the terminal. Compared with getting the same team to Heathrow, it saves an hour or more each way. Leaving the City at 5pm is a different story, though. The A13 and the Limehouse Link both slow down in the evening peak, so an evening flight needs an earlier start than the distance suggests.

Getting there from further afield

From south London, the river is in the way. The Blackwall Tunnel and the newer Silvertown Tunnel both cross close to the airport, and both charge a user fee. The Woolwich Ferry is another option when it's running. From Greenwich or Lewisham, the tunnels are usually quickest. From Bexley or Bromley, the Dartford Crossing and the A13 can work at busy times.

From west London, London City is a long way, often an hour or more through the centre. For most west London groups, Heathrow makes more sense unless the flight is only available from City.

From the north, the A12 and the Lower Lea Crossing bring you down to the Royal Docks without going through the City.

From east London, it's close. Stratford, East Ham and Barking are usually twenty minutes or less.

The terminal and timings

London City's terminal is compact, and airlines often allow shorter check-in times than at the bigger airports. For a group, we'd still allow extra time, because eight people through security takes longer than one.

The airport also keeps shorter hours than the big airports, with restrictions on early, late and weekend flights. Check the flight times when you book, because a Saturday afternoon or a late-night flight may not be available at all.

The forecourt is small. Drop-offs are quick, and the driver will pull in, unload and move off. It's not a place for long goodbyes, so say them in the vehicle. For collections, the driver will tell you where to meet once you have your bags.

ExCeL days and event traffic

ExCeL London sits next to the airport, on the other side of the dock. When there's a big exhibition on, the roads around the Royal Docks get busy, especially in the morning when exhibitors and visitors arrive and in the late afternoon when they leave. Plan for that if your flight is around those times. On the busiest exhibition days, the DLR is packed too, which is another reason groups with luggage book a vehicle.

Concerts at The O2 across the river also affect the tunnels in the evening. If you're flying back into City late on a night when there's a big show at North Greenwich, the Blackwall Tunnel approach can be slow.

Business teams and repeat travel

For teams, a minibus also saves the expense claims. One booking, one invoice and one arrival time, instead of eight taxi receipts and eight people arriving at different moments.

Companies book London City runs for teams heading to European offices, client meetings and conferences. Visiting clients flying in from Europe are collected and taken to meetings in the City or Canary Wharf, often with a name board in arrivals.

Roadshows suit City well. A team flies in for the morning, visits clients in the City and Canary Wharf, and flies out the same evening. One vehicle and one driver for the day keeps it simple. Private jet passengers use the airport's separate jet centre, and we can collect from there too.

For businesses that fly from City regularly, a standing arrangement saves time. The same pickup point, the same contacts, and the details on file.

Families and holiday flights

City isn't only for business. It has a smaller list of holiday routes, and for families in east and south-east London, it can be the easiest airport by far. A short drive, a small terminal and no long walks with children and cases. Many City flights also suit hand luggage, which makes the vehicle choice easier.

For a family group, the luggage decides the vehicle. Families from Greenwich, Lewisham and Bexley often find City closer than Gatwick, once the tunnel is factored in. A family of six with a week's luggage fits an 8-seater with some room. Larger groups, or anyone carrying sports equipment, might need a 12-seater.

For the return leg, give us the flight number when you book. The driver checks the landing time before setting off, so an early or late arrival is covered without anyone having to ring the office.

Questions people ask

How long does it take to get to London City Airport from Canary Wharf?

Around ten to fifteen minutes outside the rush hour. It's one of the shortest airport runs in London.

Is a minibus worth it for such a short trip?

For a group, yes. Eight people and their bags in one vehicle, arriving together, is simpler than four taxis or a crowded DLR with luggage.

Can you take us from London City to Heathrow for a connecting flight?

Yes, but allow plenty of time. It's a cross-London run of an hour or more, and longer at busy times.

Do you collect from the hotels around ExCeL?

Yes. Give us the hotel name and we'll plan the pickup. On big exhibition days, allow extra time for the roads around the Royal Docks.
